Breaking a year-plus hiatus from the ever-changing
rap game, Offwhyte re-emerges with three certified head-nodding bangers
on 'The Offwhyte Hi Fidelity Maxi-Single'. The record's title track, a
dedication to the rapidly evolving phenomenon of underground hip hop,
is produced by Meaty Ogre, as is the bonus cut, 'Compliments and Novelties',
featuring bass accompaniment by Griffin Rodriguez. The standout of the
record, however, is an ominous but solid track entitled 'Text', which
showcases the talents of Psiv from the Chicago underground trio The Lyric
District and is produced by the late Todd Sowka aka Metrognome, to whom
the release is dedicated. Includes instrumentals to 'Hi Fidelity' and
'Text'. All songs will be featured on the upcoming Offwhyte album, 'The
Fifth Sun', due out later this year on Galapagos4.

Offwhyte is one of the few who made enough impact with his "Squints" project to have people fiend for information on his upcoming projects, as well as enough thirst to jump a pre-album 12". And that 12" is out now, giving us a mere three tracks, that however will be exactly what Offwhytes fans awaited more impatiently than a teenager awaits his first time. - UrbanSmarts.com
This is a quite impressive 12" from one of the better underground MCs. Offwhyte's flow is constant, ever-moving, rapid-fire and on point. The beats are simple, but not weak at all; they pound a head-noddin' bump that's infectious while buoyed by a nice selection of loops
..."Text" features a twisted, alternative beat from Metrognome but the main attraction here is the intrigued wordplay as Offwhyte is joined by Psiv (of The Lyric District). Really dope, and appropriate scratching at the end is brought by Dallas Jackson. The b-side's "Compliments & Novelties" (again produced by Meaty Ogre) is once again taking us into the up-tempo wordplays of this North Side lyricist...
Meaty Ogre is simply at his best here, laying down some dark boom bap that will get your head nodding in no time. But the big surprise is how much Offwhyte's delivery has evolved since Squints. Although it still carries that characterized Josh Martinez/Dose One tint, it is a lot crisper and fluid than two years ago, and his command for rhythm and cadence has also expanded.
The finest hip hop label from Chicago, G4 (Qwel, Serf 400, Anacron, White Lightning) return with the MC who staretd it all - Offwhyte. A three song two instrumental set that kicks off with the wicked 'High Fidelity' that agin stylises like Shadow with drums phasing in and out of the mix with live bass and a dope vocal flow. Production from Meaty Ogre... Tune!!! 'Text' drops the space in the beats with wired tones and a more hyped flow that causes true head pressure and a wicked scratch sequence only adds to the mix. True mainstream bucking quality. 'Compliments & Novelties' kicks into an uptempo wacky flow, with lyrics spat out with an Edan feel. Supreme hip hop again from G4. |
