Which would you rather be famous for, your art or your art?

I think they're the same. I do not want to be famous, I just want every girl on the CTA to recognize.
I just want to cultivate love and kindness.
I just want to keep hiphop a rocking, with fresh new approaches to graf and audio.

But you want to be cool right?

I think that's a loaded question. I just want to put out good quality, visual-audio, consumable items that affect space in a positive way. I think the music that's coming out of Chicago right now is the koolest and Im glad that I have been a part of some classic recordings, engineering and producing.

What other music do you do besides hip hop?

I'm in a neo-disco / psycheprog lite rock electronica house band called R O Y C E. We've been rocking it hard now for about 10 years and I think we finally have good enough songs to share with the public.

Why don't you give them a shoutout?

FO Sho! Big Upity Ups to the bestest pure funk drummer in the midwest C-ROK, the sweets bit of white sugar vocal and guitar sweetness J-MEE, the hold it down till hurts and tickle the keys till she screams keyboardist ROS-VEGAS, the fuzz power chaos bass attack of J-LOVE, the blow your mind onetime master poetics of Q-WEL and the power engineering production of dj WhiteLightning! Our first galapagos release Subtleties of the Game will be out on valentines day feb 2003. Look for it.

What's up with this long-ass manifesto that you made for all the rappers on your album?

Just trying to take mcs out of their standard approach to writing hopefully to broaden their song topics. To try to break free from the standard hiphop subject matter which has been covered to death at this point.

So, based on the stuff you've recorded so far, do you think the album is hitting its mark?

No, not at all.

Why not, is it the rappers?

No, it's just that I have some convoluted ideas that I don't think anybody could ever convey except me and I don't rhyme so well. I do think that some of the songs are definitely on point, I think I did get people who are good rappers to be a little bit better. For certain songs, I think some people did their best work. I think some people took a step up.

What are you going to do if we get accused of making a self indulgent inside joke album?

Give it time, hope that people check out the album as a whole as well as a collection of singles by emerging underground Chicago hiphop artist such as Netherworlds, Typical Cats, Offwhyte, Qwel, Pugs. SERF400, Denizen, Unkle Butta. Mc's who are on the forefront.

What would you describe your sound as?

It's so good you can't tell if it's experimental science, or a mixer being dropped in a drink.

So, there's another DJ White Lightning?

Probably, but there is only one Dwight Lightning

And what do you have to say to them?

Stop fronting, I originated the Fleetwood Mac Steely Dan Chicago house Mix,

So, you do want to be infamous. Who has been the most enjoyable to record with at the Galapagos4 Island Resort?

The Typical Cats was the most fun, you could feel the energy in the room and just in general the intense vibe of those sessions were the most fun. And working with qwel has always been a blast, no thanks to the alley basketball games and the oldestyle. Robust is a fly guy too.

What's your desert island tape?

It's two of them—the first would be Fleetwood Mac, Rumors, and the second would be Daft Punk. The 'Around the World' one.
W E E N.

Homework. I was just listening to that today.

It's the shit. With all my roommates in Italy, those were the only two albums we could agree on.
